Our skin often looks better in the sun. Sun exposure dries out our skin and reduces inflammation. To protect itself from the effects of the sun, the skin tends to thicken, allowing sebum to accumulate and causing blackheads to worsen. Once sun exposure is over, the accumulated excess resurfaces. Acne will rebound and worsen.
It is often more sensitive skin that is affected.
Additionally, back-to-school stress, whether you're a teenager, pre-teen, or young adult, aggravates acne and blemishes.
For both adolescents and adults, it has consequences on self-perceptions with consequences on social life, self-esteem, self-confidence and therefore on quality of life.
Stress affects acne through the production of stress hormones like cortisol and androgens in the adrenal glands. Increased levels of these hormones are associated with increased sebum production and the formation of blackheads. Women may be more sensitive to stress than men when it comes to acne because androgen production in women is primarily in the adrenal glands.
